We live in a swampy area in Minnesota that during the summer is virtually covered in mosquitoes for months. We do everything we can do get rid of mosquitoes. We were thrilled when we discovered that we could make homemade bug spray. Homemade bug spray which is safer, organic and far cheaper that the bug sprays you can buy in the store. Keeping mosquitoes away is about the only way to enjoy the great outdoors.

There is a very simple guideline to making your own bug spray so that you can get rid of the chemicals. You want to start by making an essential oil based Homemade Bug Spray. You use an oil that repels insects and blend that with a medium which is usually another oil or sometimes an alcohol.

The most popular choices for essential oils that you could use are clove oil or also citronella. Clove oil and citronella are the most popular and effective against mosquitoes. You can also use eucalyptus, castor oil, peppermint, tea-tree-oil, lavender, cedarwood oils or  lemongrass. Do not ingest any of the essential oils that will go into your homemade bug spray. They are to be topical and not for internal use – keep it to your skin or clothing. Confirm that you are not allergic to any of the components. Watch for skin irritations.

When you start mixing the oils you will want to combine it with some sort of agent that you can mix according to the following ratio – 1 part essential oil to 10 parts of agent. The agent could be rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, vodka, olive oil or jojoba oil.

Amazing Anti-Mosquitoe Agent Spray

Use a 4 oz. Container.

  • 20 drops Eucalyptus Oil
  • 20 drops Cedarwood oil
  • 10 drops Tes Tree oil
  • 10 drops Geranium oil
  • 2 oz. of carrier agent from the list above

Mix is all up and apply to skin as needed.

 

Mint Free Bug Spray

  • 1/4 tsp. of catnip
  • 1/4 tsp. of spearmint
  • 1 cup of isopropyl alcohol
  • 1 cup of water

Combine in a spray bottle. Shake well. Use freely on your skin or clothing

 

Herbal insect repellent which is safe to apply on the face

  • 4 drops sandalwood
  • 4 drops cajeput
  • 4 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil (evoo)

Mix well and apply as needed. Safe for use on the face if you pre-test for allergies.

 

Vodka Mist Insect Repellent

  • 50 drops Jojoba
  • 50 drops Lavender
  • 25 drops Eucalyptus lemon
  • 25 drops Lemongrass
  • 25 drops Patchouli
  • 25 drops Catjeput.
  • 1 fluid ounce of vodka.

Mix well. Apply jojoba oil before spraying the repellent on the skin.

 

Natural insect repellent lotion

  • 2 ounces distilled water
  • 2 ounces of olive oil
  • 120 drops citronella essential oil

Combine ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Slowly drizzle in 2 ounces of olive oil while beating quickly with a wire whisk. After the oil is mixed into the distilled water, stir in 120 drops of citronella essential oil.
